How to Combine Slat Wall Panels and Large Panels for a Custom Feature Wall

Feature walls are moving beyond a single finish. For developers, architects and interior designers, combining vertical slat wall panels with large decorative panels creates depth, rhythm and a more tailored result without making the room feel busy.

Why combine slat panels and large wall panels?

Vertical wood-look slats bring warmth and a strong architectural line. Large-format panels create calm, continuous surfaces that help balance the texture. Used together, the two finishes can define zones, frame millwork or highlight a focal area while keeping the overall palette cohesive.

In the living-room installation shown here, narrow vertical slats create a transition beside the window, while smooth large panels form the main backdrop. A stone-look accent and warm wood tone add contrast. The result feels custom because each surface has a clear role rather than competing for attention.

Design considerations for residential and commercial projects

  • Start with the focal point. Decide whether the wall should frame seating, reception, retail display or another architectural feature.
  • Control the number of finishes. Two primary panel styles plus one accent material are often enough to create interest while preserving visual order.
  • Use vertical lines strategically. Slat panels can emphasize ceiling height and help visually separate adjoining zones.
  • Coordinate undertones. Warm wood, cool grey and stone-look surfaces should be reviewed together under the project's actual lighting.
  • Plan transitions early. Panel edges, corners, outlets and connections to cabinetry should be considered before installation.

A practical material-selection process

For specification work, photographs are only a starting point. Samples allow the project team to compare colour, texture and scale against flooring, cabinetry, paint and lighting. For multi-unit residential, hospitality, office or retail projects, early sample review also helps establish a repeatable wall concept before final quantities are confirmed.
