Nautical restaurant wall panel project featuring Bulk Gray and Metal Blue bar counter cladding with Matte Gray wainscoting

A good restaurant interior should tell a story the moment customers walk in. For this fish and chips restaurant project, the design was inspired by a nautical and coastal theme, using colors and materials that reflect the feeling of the ocean, sky, deck and shoreline.

RichVaugh Metal Blue, Bulk Gray and Stone Gray wall panels were used throughout the space, including the bar counter cladding, dining area walls, hallway and washroom. Instead of treating wall panels as simple decoration, this project shows how the right panel colors and finishes can support a complete commercial interior design concept.

The deep blue Stones represent the ocean, the lighter blue details bring in the feeling of the sky, the wood-look flooring creates a deck-like atmosphere, and the Stone Gray panels add a stone-inspired texture similar to coastal rocks and sandy shorelines.

Metal Blue and Bulk Gray Wall Panels for Ocean-Inspired Bar Counter Cladding

The bar counter is the strongest visual feature in this restaurant. It is one of the first areas customers see when they enter, so the material choice needs to be both visually memorable and suitable for commercial use.

In this project, RichVaugh Metal Blue wall panels were used on the front of the bar counter to create a bold ocean-blue accent. The deep blue finish connects naturally with the fish and chips concept and reinforces the nautical-inspired restaurant design. It also works with the blue seating, doors and other interior details to create a strong coastal atmosphere.

To balance the bold blue tone, Bulk Gray wall panels were used on the side areas of the counter. The gray finish adds a stone-inspired texture, similar to coastal rocks and sandy shorelines. This helps soften the bright blue while giving the counter a more grounded and architectural look.

It is important to note that regular wall panels are usually not suitable for countertop surfaces because they are not designed for heavy abrasion, cutting, dragging or constant impact on a horizontal work surface. In this project, the panels are used for bar counter cladding, counter front panels and counter side wrapping, not as the countertop itself.

This is where RichVaugh wall panels offer a strong advantage. Our impact-resistant panels are suitable for counter front and counter side applications, helping create a cleaner and more durable commercial counter finish. RichVaugh panels can also be bent at 90 degrees, making them especially suitable for counter edge wrapping and bar counter cladding.

Instead of leaving exposed corners or relying only on separate trim pieces, the bendable panel design allows the counter to have a cleaner wrapped look. The combination of Metal Blue and Bulk Gray creates a counter feature that feels bold, modern and closely connected to the restaurant’s ocean-inspired theme.

Concrete Gray wall panels installed on all four walls of a commercial restaurant washroom

The restaurant washroom was fully finished with Stone Gray wall panels on all four walls.

This creates a continuous stone-inspired look that feels clean, modern and consistent with the rest of the restaurant. The Stone Gray finish connects back to the counter detail and supports the coastal design idea of rocks, sand and shoreline textures.

Using the same wall panel finish throughout the washroom also helps the space feel more complete. Instead of treating the washroom as a separate area, the design keeps it connected to the overall nautical-inspired restaurant interior.

For commercial projects, washrooms are important because customers notice whether the space feels clean and well maintained. Stone Gray wall panels give this washroom a simple, modern and professional look that matches the rest of the restaurant.

Matte Gray wall panels installed as modern wainscoting in a coastal restaurant dining area

Bulk Gray Wall Panels Used as Modern Restaurant Wainscoting

In the hallway and dining area, RichVaugh Matte Gray wall panels were installed on the lower section of the walls to create a modern wainscoting-style effect.

Traditional wainscoting is often made with wood trim, painted panels or decorative moulding. In this restaurant, the Bulk Gray panels create a similar lower-wall design, but with a cleaner and more contemporary commercial finish.

The darker gray-blue stone also continues the nautical color palette. It works together with the Metal Blue counter, blue seating, black ceiling and wood-look flooring to create a balanced restaurant interior.

One reason RichVaugh panels work well for this type of wainscoting-style design is their light-absorbing surface. Instead of creating harsh reflections, the panels help the lower wall area look more calm and refined. This is especially useful in dining areas, where the wall finish should feel clean and comfortable without distracting customers.

For a more advanced version of this design, RichVaugh also offers hidden LED strip accessories. These accessories can create a “see the light, not the fixture” effect, allowing the wainscoting-style wall panels to be upgraded with soft indirect lighting. This can make restaurant walls, hallway panels and commercial feature walls look more premium.

RichVaugh wall panels are available with ULC fire certification, making them a strong option for commercial wall panel projects in Canada. For restaurants, cafes, offices, retail stores and other public-facing interiors, certified materials can help support a safer and more professional renovation process.

Project requirements may vary depending on local building code, installation area and project type, so restaurant owners and contractors should always confirm the required specifications before installation. However, choosing wall panels with proper fire certification is an important step for commercial interior projects.
